Chinese New Year 2009: Year of the Ox
Today I went and visited the Chinese New Year Party in the Howard Thurman Center at Boston University.
This event was hosted by the Chinese Language Program and the Undergraduate Chinese Society to celebrate the year of the Ox. The year of the Ox apparently started on January 26th so I'm not totally sure why they were celebrating it so late.
The student performances were the main part of the event. There were people performing skits, singing songs and reciting poems. There was even a guy who put on a martial arts performance. The organizers of the event projected scenes from the Chinese Music Festival onto a screen behind the performers. They even left the volume up so it was a bit difficult to concentrate on the student performances with such a distraction.
The master of ceremonies began quizing audience members about what Chinese year it was. He was trying to be engaging but he kept bringing this topic up every time he got on the stage and it became rather lame after a while.
All the performances were in Mandarin Chinese so I couldn't understand a word. Therefore, it was not entertaining to me.
The room was decorated with traditional Chinese lanterns and there were tables of yummy food in the back: dumplings, scallion pancakes, noodles and rice.
Once the food was gone, people began to leave! How rude. They didn't stay long enough to see the martial arts performance.
I met a student, Yoni Gontownik and his friend Michelle Ai who was a foreign exchange student. Yoni said he was there because his History professor suggested it and, even though he wasn't Chinese, said he was glad we could have something for the Chinese community. Michelle enjoyed it because it reminded her of her childhood.
